Five Common Medicare Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Many people assume Medicare enrollment is automatic or believe all plans offer the same benefits.  Unfortunately, small mistakes can lead to higher costs and gaps in coverage.

  1. Missing Your Enrollment Deadline

Many people don’t realize that Medicare enrollment has specific timeframes. Missing your Initial  Enrollment Period may result in late enrollment penalties or delays in coverage.

Tip: Start learning about Medicare a few months before turning 65 so you have time to review your  options and enroll on time.

  1. Assuming Medicare Covers Everything

Original Medicare helps cover many healthcare expenses, but it doesn’t pay for everything.  Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, dental care, vision services, and prescription medications may still  leave you with out-of-pocket costs.

Tip: Consider reviewing additional coverage options, such as Medicare Supplement, Medicare  Advantage, prescription drug plans, or dental and vision plans.

  1. Choosing a Plan Based Only on Monthly Premiums

A low monthly premium may seem appealing, but it doesn’t always mean you’ll spend less overall.  Copays, deductibles, provider networks, and prescription drug costs can significantly impact your  healthcare expenses.

Tip: Look at the total cost of coverage, not just the monthly premium.

  1. Not Checking if Your Doctors and Medications Are Covered

Not all plans include the same doctors, hospitals, or prescription drug coverage. Choosing a plan  without reviewing your providers and medications could mean higher costs or having to switch  doctors.

Tip: Before enrolling, make sure your preferred doctors, specialists, pharmacies, and prescriptions  are included in the plan you’re considering.

  1. Keeping the Same Plan Year After Year Without Reviewing It

Insurance plans can change from year to year. Premiums, benefits, prescription drug coverage, and  provider networks may be different each year.

Tip: We take the time to review your coverage annually to ensure it still meets your healthcare needs  and budget.
